Jakarta – On Thursday, November 30, 2023, nine representatives from the Master of Universal Warfare Strategy, Asymmetric Warfare, and Defense Diplomacy Faculty of Defense Strategy at the Indonesian National Defense University attended the seminar titled “Addressing Geopolitics Shifts in The Asia-Pacific: Challenges and Opportunities.” The event, organized by the Strategic Defense Installation Agency of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, took place at the Indonesia Kempinski Hotel – Grand Ballroom, 11th Floor West Mall, Jakarta.
During the seminar, three speakers, namely Professor Rory Medcalf, Ian Jinga, and Edna Caroline, presented their perspectives. In summary, the International Seminar on “Addressing Geopolitics Shifts in The Asia-Pacific: Challenges and Opportunities” held on November 30th, 2023, provided valuable insights:
1. Professor Rory Medcalf provided a comprehensive framework for managing the
complexities of the Indo-Pacific region. His emphasis on key principles like deterrence,
diplomacy, development, solidarity, and resilience underscored the multifaceted nature of
security and the need for a holistic approach in safeguarding national interests.
2. Ian Jinga’s presentation delved into the geopolitical challenges and opportunities in the
Asia-Pacific, highlighting critical flashpoints, incidents, and risks to regional stability. His
analysis of maritime routes, energy security, and supply chain vulnerabilities offered a
comprehensive view of strategic concerns and proposed practical measures for risk reduction.
3. Edna Caroline’s discussion centered on maritime cooperation’s significance in
navigating the Asia-Pacific’s intricate geopolitical landscape. Her exploration of power
dynamics, case studies, and recommendations, particularly the proposal for an ASEAN
Maritime Cooperation Agency, shed light on adaptive strategies and collaborative solutions
tailored to the region’s complexities.
Overall, these presentations encapsulated a holistic understanding of the challenges and
opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region, providing theoretical frameworks, case studies, and
practical recommendations for navigating its evolving dynamics.
